IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 270-98
May 29, 1998

SECRETARY COHEN EULOGIZES SEN. BARRY GOLDWATER

"Barry Goldwater devoted his life to keeping America strong and free.

"He flew as a pilot during World War II, served as a major general in the Air Force Reserves during the Cold War, and chaired the Senate Armed Services Committee in the 1980s. In that post, he authored the Goldwater-Nichols Act to restructure our military leadership for the 21st century. The strength of today's military reflects the dedication and vision that Barry Goldwater gave to his country during three decades in the Senate. He always stood up for the men and women in uniform.

"It was an honor for me to serve with Sen. Goldwater on the Senate Armed Services Committee, where he was a wise mentor. The country has lost a great patriot, and I have lost a good friend."
