SECNAV TO INAUGURATE LIFELINES QUALITY OF LIFE SUPPORT SERVICE

Secretary of the Navy Richard Danzig and Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Manpower and Reserve Affairs Carolyn Becraft will host a live, 90-minute nationwide broadcast to inaugurate the LIFELines Initiative on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999 at 2 p.m. (EST) at the Acquisition Center of Excellence (Building 22), Washington Navy Yard. Broadcast highlights will include: quality of life statements by senior federal officials, a guided tour of the new internet-based access and delivery system, and live remote feeds from East and West Coast locations reacting to the new system.

LIFELines is a new joint military services partnership for Quality of Life (QOL) support services delivery being developed by and for Defense Department personnel and other qualified beneficiaries; however, most of the information and programs on the new system will be available to the general public as well. LIFELines leverages the power of partnerships and four telecommunication technologies - the internet, teleconferencing, satellite broadcasting, and cable television. LIFELines provides quality of life information, support services and access around the clock and the world via two major information channels: the LIFELines Internet Component (called the "QOL Mall") and the LIFELines Broadcast Component (called the "QOL Broadcast Network").

When the QOL Mall is fully operational, users can "go shopping" at the Mall to meet their QOL needs, including: find housing, register for school and training courses, schedule and receive counseling services, take a training course, go to the library, learn about the military lifestyle, get emergency financial assistance, gain information about medical care, find out about job opportunities, buy uniforms, and much, much more!

Those interested in more detail should contact Capt. Tracy Connors (connors.tracy@hq.navy.mil) at 202-433-4069 or Dick Thompson at 202-433-4067.
