NATIONAL GUARD TO CELEBRATE 363RD BIRTHDAY AT CAPITOL HILL CEREMONY

The National Guard celebrates its 363rd birthday Tuesday, Dec. 14, at 4:30 p.m. EST at the Russell Senate Office Building, Room 325, on Capitol Hill.

The event commemorates the 363rd anniversary of the Massachusetts Bay Colony forming the first permanent militia regiments in colonial America. Their creation in 1636 was the birth of the state-organized defense forces known as the National Guard, now a part of the Department of Defense's Total Force.

At the ceremony, the Guard will announce the recipient of the 4th Annual Major General G. V. "Sonny" Montgomery Award. The award is one of the highest the chief, National Guard Bureau, can bestow and is presented annually to the individual most supportive of National Guard activities throughout the year.
