GENERAL OFFICER ANNOUNCEMENT
Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen announced today that the President has nominated Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Raymond P. Ayres Jr. for appointment to the grade of lieutenant general and assignment as the commander, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Atlantic; commanding general, Fleet Marine Forces Atlantic; commander, U.S. Marine Corps Bases Atlantic; commander, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Europe; commanding general, Fleet Marine Forces Europe; and commander, U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Southern Command.
Ayres is currently serving as the deputy chief of staff for Plans, Policies and Operations, Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps, Washington, D.C.
