GENERAL OFFICER ANNOUNCEMENT
Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen announced today that the President has nominated Army Maj. Gen. Freddy E. McFarren for appointment to the grade of lieutenant general with assignment as commanding general, Fifth U. S. Army, Fort Sam Houston, Texas. McFarren is currently serving as the commanding general, 24th Infantry Division (Mechanized) and Fort Riley, Fort Riley, Kan.
