DACOWITS VISITS U.S. SERVICEMEMBERS THROUGHOUT EUROPE

The Executive Committee of the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services (DACOWITS) will visit military commands and meet with servicemembers in Italy, Spain, Germany, Jordan and Kosovo from July 16 - 29, 2000. The DACOWITS members will receive command briefings on missions, demographics, and installation-specific issues. They will meet with military women and men in focus groups to listen to their perceptions of duty overseas and note their observations in areas such as force development and utilization, equality management, and quality of life.

DACOWITS conducts a two-week overseas trip each year visiting installations in the European theater one year and installations in the Western Pacific theater the next year. The Service secretaries recommend installations to visit and the secretary of Defense approves the itinerary. At the conclusion of the trip, DACOWITS will report to the secretary of Defense on the broad issues raised during their visits that have impact on the utilization of women, readiness, and morale.

Established by Secretary of Defense George C. Marshall in 1951, DACOWITS is composed of 36 civilian members selected for their achievements in business, their professions, and civil and public service. The purpose of the Committee is to advise the secretary of Defense about policies and matters relating to personnel, specifically those matters relating to women in the Services.
