The Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services (DACOWITS) will hold its fall conference, Oct. 18-22, 2000, at the Luxor Hotel, 3900 Las Vegas Boulevard South in Las Vegas, Nev. Assistant Secretary of Defense for Force Management Policy Alphonso Maldon will be the host. The United States Air Force is the supporting Service. Keynote speakers will include Secretary of the Air Force F. Whitten Peters, Under Secretary of the Air Force Carol DiBattiste, Chief of the National Guard Bureau Lt. Gen. Russell Davis, and Air Force Lt. Col. Kimberly Olsen, former head of refueling operations in the Combined Air Operations Center.
DACOWITS was established in 1951 by then Secretary of Defense George C. Marshall to advise the secretary on policies and matters relating to women in the Military Services. In its advisory capacity, the committee recommends measures to ensure the effective utilization of women in the armed forces. The committee meets formally each spring and fall to discuss current issues facing women in the military Services. Over the years, DACOWITS has been instrumental in bringing to fruition an unprecedented number of opportunities for qualified women to serve in our armed forces.
The committee is composed of 36 civilian members selected on the basis of their achievements in business, professional fields, civic service, and by geographic location. DACOWITS members are appointed by the secretary of Defense for a three-year term. The members serve in one of the three sub-committees that address issues relevant to Equality Management, Forces Development and Utilization, and Quality of Life. Unique to this conference is a panel discussion that will address specific issues related to pregnancy policies of all Services.
The conference is open to the public. For further information, check the website, http://www.dtic.mil/dacowits or email Lt. Col. Susan Kolb, DACOWITS public affairs and protocol liaison officer, at Kolbs@pr.osd.mil .
