ADDITIONAL REMAINS RECOVERED FROM USS COLE

The Navy recovered the remains of two more sailors today from USS Cole. Until they have been identified and their next of kin notified, they will continue to be carried as missing. Efforts continue to recover the remains of four other Cole sailors.

The remains of the eight sailors recovered over the past two days were flown out of Yemen today (approx. 8 p.m. local, 1 p.m. EDT). A small ceremony at the airport included escorts from USS Cole, attendants from USS Hawes, and a combined honor guard of U.S. and Yemeni Armed Forces personnel. U.S. Ambassador to Yemen Barbara Bodine and a Yemeni government official attended.

The remains are being flown to Dover Air Force Base, Del. through Bahrain and are expected to arrive on Thursday.

Of the injured, 29 have been released from the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Va. Eight injured remain in the hospital in Portsmouth and two in Landstuhl.
