The annual Secretary of Defense Maintenance Awards, including the Phoenix Trophy, were presented yesterday, at a special awards banquet during the Department of Defense fourth annual Maintenance Symposium held in Charleston, S. C.
Each year the Secretary of Defense Maintenance Awards Program recognizes outstanding achievements in military equipment and weapon system maintenance by organizations of the military departments. Awards are presented in the categories of small, medium, and large units. In addition, the Phoenix Trophy is presented to the best of the best of each year's winners from all categories. This year's Phoenix Trophy winner is the U.S. Air Force's 555th Fighter Squadron at Aviano Air Base, Italy.
The awards are provided by the National Defense Industrial Association, which co-sponsors the maintenance symposium with DoD.
The awards presentations were made by Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Logistics and Materiel Readiness Roger W. Kallock; Director of Logistics for the Joint Staff Army Lt. Gen. John M. "Mike" McDuffie; and Assistant Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Maintenance Policy, Programs and Resources Robert T. Mason.

U. S. Air Force, 60th/349th Aircraft Generation Squadron, Travis Air Force Base, Calif.
U. S. Navy, nuclear aircraft carrier, the USS Theodore Roosevelt
U. S. Air Force, 16th Logistics Group, Hurlburt Field, Fla.
