HAWAII UNIT REPLACES 10TH MOUNTAIN DIVISION IN HAITI

In a planned rotation of U.S. forces in Haiti to begin this January, units of the 25th Infantry Division from Schofield Barracks, Hawaii will replace units of the 10th Mountain Division (Light) from Ft. Drum, New York.

The 25th Infantry "Tropic Lightning" task force of approximately 3,500 U.S. soldiers will have the same mission as the joint forces presently in Haiti. They will continue support of the democratically elected government and maintain a secure and stable environment to permit the elements of democracy to continue to develop.

This rotation represents a normal four to six month deployment schedule most U.S. forces maintain, which allows for training and maintenance of equipment.

The redeploying units of the 10th Mountain Division, commanded by Maj. Gen. David C. Meade, arrived in Haiti in late September and played a major role in the return of Haitian president Jean-Bertrande Aristide.
