FOR HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES
AND MINORITY INSTITUTIONS
Deputy Secretary of Defense John Deutch announced today plans to award grants
and contracts totalling some $46 million to 37 professors at 31 Historically
Black Colleges and Universities and Minority Institutions (HBCU/MIs) for
science, mathematics, and engineering infrastructure support programs. These
were competitively selected from 81 proposals submitted to the Army Research
Office, the Office of Naval Research, the Air Force Office of Scientific
Research, and the Advanced Research Projects Agency in response to a
solicitation in August 1994.
Recipients of the awards will establish educational research consortia,
centers for aerospace studies, or purchase equipment for educational
infrastructure and/or research needs. Awards ranging from $65,000 for
equipment to $9 million for a five-year education/research consortium are
expected to be made in the third quarter of fiscal year 1995. Awards will be
made only after written agreements have been reached between the Department and
the institutions. Fiscal year 1994 and 1995 funds for these awards total $24
million. Additional funding requirements for $22 million are contingent upon
future appropriations. A list of recipients is attached.
