DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE STATEMENT UPON RECEIPT OF "ROLES AND MISSION REPORT"

Secretary of Defense William J. Perry and Vice Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral William A. Owens, on behalf of the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff, have received the report of the Roles and Missions Commission. The Department will conduct an extensive analysis and review of the Commission's recommendations. The Department has 90 days to submit comments on the report to Congress. Therefore, there will be no official comment on the report prior to the Congressional response.

Secretary Perry and General Shalikashvili wish to thank Commission Chairman Dr. John P. White and the members of the Commission for their outstanding effort in producing this in-depth assessment of the roles, missions and functions of the armed forces in the post-Cold War era.
