GENERAL OFFICER ANNOUNCEMENT
Secretary of Defense William J. Perry announced today that the President has
nominated Maj. Gen. Hubert G. Smith, United States Army, for appointment to the
grade of lieutenant general and assignment as deputy commander in chief/chief
of staff, United States Transportation Command, Scott Air Force Base, Ill.
Since October 1993, he has served as the commanding general, 21st Theater Army
Area Command, United States Army Europe and Seventh Army.
Major General Smith was born on June 30, 1941, in Cosby, Tenn.
