REAR ADMIRAL JAMES P. SHEAR
APPOINTED TO RESERVE FORCES POLICY BOARD
Secretary of Defense William Perry has announced the designation of Rear
Admiral James P. Schear, U.S. Naval Reserve, as the Naval Reserve member on the
Reserve Forces Policy Board, retroactive to July 1, 1995. Schear currently
serves as the Deputy Commander, Maritime Defense Zone, Atlantic, as well as
Commander, Readiness Command Region Four, Fort Dix, N.J.
The 24-member board was created by Congress in 1952. Acting through the
assistant secretary of defense for reserve affairs, the board serves as the
principle policy advisor to the Secretary of Defense on reserve component
matters. Members include the assistant secretary responsible for reserve
affairs from each of the military departments, and active and reserve component
general and flag officers representing all Services, including the Coast
Guard.
Admiral Shear, a 1967 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, started his career as
a naval aviator. That career has spanned 28-years and included a variety of
positions including staff, instruction and command at all levels. His
decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal,
Navy Commendation Medal, the Medal for Humane Actions and theVietnamese Cross
of Gallantry, as well as numerous other campaign and service medals.
Admiral Shear and his wife, Sharon, reside in Pittsburgh, Pa. with their
children, Ryan, Matthew, Adam and Caroline.
