General Officer Announcement

Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld announced today that the acting secretary of the Army has selected Army Col. Michael B. Cates as the chief, Army Veterinary Corps, and the president has nominated him for appointment to the rank of brigadier general.

Cates is currently serving as the commander, 100th Medical Detachment, 30th Medical Brigade, V Corps, Army Europe and Seventh Army, Germany. In addition to his duties as the chief, Army Veterinary Corps, he is pending assignment as commanding general, Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md.

The assignment of Cates should not be construed as the Senate's consent of his promotion nomination, and there will be no action to frock or promote him until Senate confirmation.
