DoD, NDIA Environmental Conference in Tampa

The Department of Defense, in conjunction with the National Defense Industrial Association, will hold the 2005 Joint Services Environmental Management (JSEM) Conference and Exhibition April 11-14, in Tampa, Fla. JSEM, which is being held in the Tampa Convention Center, will bring together about 2,500 professionals from the military services, industry, academia, local, state, and federal agencies to translate ideas, success stories, case histories, current trends, and technologies into solutions for environmental protection and enhancement.

Leading DoD's delegation and keynoting the conference opening session April 12 will be Michael W. Wynne, under secretary of defense for acquisition, technology and logistics. Joining Wynne will be Philip W. Grone, deputy under secretary of defense for installations and environment, and Dr. Paul Mayberry, deputy under secretary of defense for readiness. Florida Gov. Jeb Bush is also scheduled to speak at JSEM's opening program.

In addition, Alex Beehler, assistant deputy under secretary of defense for environment, safety and occupational health, will participate along with other DoD officials in panel discussions during the conference. Panel topics will include outreach and transparency, sustainability, and future directions of test and training military range management.

"The Department of Defense is proud to be holding this conference in a state with which we share a strong partnership in the environmental arena," said Wynne. "Florida has been at the forefront of demonstrating the theme of this year's conference, 'Sustaining the Mission and Our Environment,' with its resolute commitment to the environment and our nation's military."

Florida is a key partner in ensuring mission sustainability by helping sustain installation operations, and a leader in supporting our land, sea, air, and space assets to help maintain the military readiness today and in the future through effective management of our test and training ranges, said Wynne.

After the conference's opening session, Bush and Wynne will hold a media availability in Room 3 of the convention center, which will be followed by a media roundtable with DoD and state of Florida environmental experts.

Media may cover all the open events at JSEM upon media credential validation and registration at the convention center. The media point of contact is Air Force Maj. Susan Idziak. Through April 8, Susan can be contacted at (703) 695-4780; after that date she can be reached at 703-380-9513.
