DoD Transports Humanitarian Aid to Lebanon
The Department of Defense has delivered more than 29,000
pounds of mixed medical items, blankets, cots, and a tent to help
the dislocated civilians in Lebanon. The items, worth almost
$234,000 were shipped from a DoD depot in Mechanicsburg, Pa. to
the Beirut airport last week for delivery to the American
Embassy. This is the first shipment of U.S. Government excess
property that has been provided to Lebanon since the most recent
conflict began.
Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for
Humanitarian and Refugee Affairs Col. David Skalko said the
Department strives to fulfill its responsibility within the
limits of its resources to help alleviate suffering throughout
the world.
Under the 1986 DOD Authorization Act, HRA is authorized to
transport non-lethal excess property, relief supplies and
privately donated cargo to meet humanitarian needs worldwide. In
fiscal year 1995, the Humanitarian Assistance Program completed
89 humanitarian shipments to more than 47 countries with an
estimated acquisition value of $86 million.
