IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 344-96
June 07, 1996

SECDEF STATEMENT ON THE CT-43 ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

The Air Force accident investigation board report on the CT- 43 crash is detailed and thorough. It shows that there was no single cause of the crash but concludes that several mistakes occurred simultaneously.

Following the accident, the Department of Defense and the Air Force began making changes in the equipment, training, procedures and personnel. We will consider additional changes based on a complete evaluation of the investigation board's findings.

Nothing we do will ease the pain and loss from the accident, which cost families and the nation so much. But we will use the lessons from the accident to make military aviation as safe as possible.
