ESTES TO REPLACE ASHY AS COMMANDER IN CHIEF, NORAD

Secretary of Defense William J. Perry announced today that the President has nominated Lt. Gen. Howell M. Estes III, United States Air Force, for appointment to the grade of general with assignment as commander in chief, North American Aerospace Defense Command; commander in chief, United States Space Command; commander, Air Force Space Command and Department of Defense manager for Space Transportation Contingency Support Operations, Peterson AFB, Colo. Estes is currently assigned as director for Operations, Joint Staff, Pentagon, Washington, D.C.

Estes is scheduled to assume these commands from Gen. Joseph W. Ashy, United States Air Force, who has been recommended by the Secretary of the Air Force for advancement to the grade of general on the retired list.

Estes was born Dec. 16, 1941, in San Antonio, Texas. Ashy was born Oct. 16, 1940, in Jasper, Texas.
