On June 6, 2001, President George W. Bush signed Executive Order 13216 to increase opportunities for and improve the quality of life of approximately thirteen million Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders living in the United States and the U.S.- and Pacific Island jurisdictions. This action renewdesigns a previous Executive Order, which established the President's Advisory Commission and a federal Interagency Working Group on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

| National Asian Pacific American Heritage Month |
VA proudly joins the Nation in celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in May. This year's theme is "Freedom for All, A Nation We Call Our Own."
In June 1977, Representatives Frank Horton of New York and Norman Y. Mineta of California introduced a House resolution that called upon the President to proclaim the first 10 days of May as Asian-Pacific American Heritage Week. President Jimmy Carter signed a joint resolution declaring May 4-10, 1979, as the first Asian Pacific American Heritage Week. In 1990, President George H. W. Bush expanded the celebration to the entire month. Public Law 102-450, approved on October 23, 1992, designated May of each year as National Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

Asian-Pacific American Servicewomen in
Defense of Our Nation |
Although thousands of Asian-Pacific American women have served and are serving in the US Armed Forces in times of war and peace, only a small number of these women have told their stories by registering with the Women In Military Service For America Memorial.

Asian-Americans in the United States Military
During the Korean War |
Many Asian-Americans also served in combat units in Korea. Some were recognized for bravery on the battlefield. Unlike in World War II when there was the Japanese-American 442d Regimental Combat Team, there were no separate Asian-American units during the Korean War.
