Aug. 22, 2003 The Army observes
days, weeks and months in honor of African Americans, Hispanic
Americans, Asians, Pacific Islanders and Native Americans,
to name just some of the people recognized. On Wednesday some
cultures not previously recognized were celebrated on post.
The event at Spates Hall was called Multicultural Day and
included food, music and artifacts from regions as diverse
as Austria, Mexico, Greece, France and the Middle East.
Garrison Commander Col. Christopher Essig kicked off the festivities
with a short speech.
"It's a little different format, a little different event,"
the colonel said. "We don't cover all of (the cultures)
throughout the course of the year, so we decided to hit the
ones we miss during the year."
Sgt. 1st Class Lynice Thorpe of the equal opportunity office
was at Spates early helping to decorate.
"It's the first time for Multicul-tural Day," Thorpe
said. "We want to bring awareness of different cultures.
We have five entertainers and it will be more festive." Full
