Colorado's senior U.S. Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell was born in Auburn, California on April 13, 1933. His mother, Mary Vierra, was a Portuguese immigrant, and his father, Albert Campbell, was a Northern Cheyenne Indian. Campbell is the only American Indian presently serving in the United States Senate, and is one of 44 Chiefs of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe. IconFull Story

Campbell Introduces Bill to Resolve Indian Trust Suit
Washington, D.C. — Today Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-CO), joined by key Democrat and Republican Senators, introduced legislation to help resolve the 8-year old Cobell v. Norton.

Photo-John Bennett HerringtonNASA EXPERIENCE: Selected by NASA in April 1996, Herrington reported to the Johnson Space Center in August 1996. He completed two years of training and evaluation, and is qualified for flight assignment as a mission specialist. Herrington was assigned to the Flight Support Branch of the Astronaut Office where he served as a member of the Astronaut Support Personnel team responsible for Shuttle launch preparations and post-landing operations. Most recently, he flew on STS-113 logging over 330 hours in space, including 3 EVAs totaling 19 hours and 55 minutes.

Herrington was born Sept. 14, 1958, in Wetumka, Oklahoma. He grew up in Colorado Springs, Colo., Riverton, Wyoming, and Plano, Texas. IconFull Story


Signew L. Riley: Third Generation Indian Scout

Photo-Signew L. RileyStaff Sgt. Sinew Riley was the ranking Apache scout at Huachuca in the 30s and 40s. From the Whiteriver Reservation, Riley was a third generation scout. His grandfather was a dead shot who had been hanged in 1883 for the Cibicue mutiny.

Riley, a 1910 graduate of the Phoenix Indian School, lived with his second wife, known only as Mamma. His sixteen children lived in the little Indian village on the northwest side of Huachuca Creek just across from the housing area which would become known as Apache Flats.
