Eric Shinseki
General Shinseki assumed duties as the 34th Chief
of Staff, United States Army, on 22 June 1999.
General Shinseki graduated from the United States Military Academy
in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He also holds a Master
of Arts Degree in English Literature from Duke University. General
Shinsekis military education includes the Armor Officer Advanced
Course, the United States Army Command and General Staff College,
and the National War College.

YOKOSUKA, Japan "When I was a boy in Quezon City, Philippines,
I studied Filipino heroes like Jose Rizal and General Emilio Aguinaldo
but I never thought I would become a hero to other Asian-Americans,"
Capt. Jose R. Corpus said recently during an interview. Corpus received
the 2000 Meritorious Service Award by the Washington, D.C.-based
Federal Asian Pacific American Council (FAPAC) May 10.

R. Chang-Diaz, Ph.D.
Current Astronaut
Born April 5, 1950, in San Jos, Costa Rica, to the late Mr. Ramn
A. Chang-Morales and Mrs. Mara Eugenia Daz De Chang. Married to
the former Peggy Marguerite Doncaster of Alexandria, Louisiana. Four
children. He enjoys music, glider planes, soccer, scuba-diving, and
hiking. His mother, brothers and sisters still reside in Costa Rica.

Chawla, Ph.D.
Current Astronaut
Born in Karnal, India. Kalpana Chawla enjoys flying, hiking, back-packing,
and reading. She holds Certificated Flight Instructor's license with
airplane and glider ratings, Commercial Pilot's licenses for single-
and multi-engine land and seaplanes, and Gliders, and instrument rating
for airplanes. She enjoys flying aerobatics and tail-wheel airplanes.

Danville, California, to be his hometown. Single. He enjoys flying,
basketball, racquetball, and skiing. EDUCATION: Graduated from Monte
Vista High School, Danville, California, in 1978; received a bachelor
of science degree in chemical engineering from the University of
California, Berkeley, in 1983, and a master of science degree and
a doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of California,
Santa Barbara, in 1985 and 1987, respectively.

skiing, travel. His parents, Charlie and Snowlily Lu, reside in
Fremont, California. EDUCATION: Graduated from R.L. Thomas High
