Short View of Basis Training American Forces Press Service WASHINGTON -- It's not fair to compare the services' basic training programs, because the services have different missions and different requirements for their members. But there are similarities. The services say basic training is the place civilians are inculcated into the military life. They also say there needs to be a "culminating event" for basic training. Here is a list: Marine boot camp is conducted at Parris Island Recruit Depot, S.C., and at San Diego Recruit Depot, Calif. It is a 12-week course. The culminating event is the Crucible. Army basic training is held at Fort Jackson, S.C., Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., Fort Sill, Okla., and Fort Knox, Ky. It is a nine-week course. The culminating event is called Victory Forge." Navy boot camp is nine weeks long at Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Ill. The culminating event is Battle Stations. Air Force basic training is six weeks and is held at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. The culminating event will be called Warrior Week.
