'Big E' Kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month

ABOARD USS ENTERPRISE, At Sea (NNS) Sept 29, 2003 — Medal of Honor recipient Marine Sgt. Alfredo Gonzalez never lived to read the citation accompanying his medal. The wounds he received in the Vietnam War during the initial phase of Operation Hue City were fatal.

Today, his legacy sails with the USS Enterprise (CVN 65) Carrier Strike Group aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Gonzalez (DDG 66). The Navy and Marine Corps have a long tradition of honoring their own, and this month, Gonzalez’ heritage is celebrated nationwide.
