TODAY'S APPOINTMENTS

SECRETARY OF DEFENSE WILLIAM COHEN

12:45 p.m. (EST) Secretary Cohen will address the Illinois House of Representatives on the defense budget and other military issues. Following the address, there will be a media availability in the Illinois State Capitol Building press room (Blue Room). The point of contact for the speech and media availability is Steve Brown at (217) 782-6360. An attempt will be made to pipe the Secretary's remarks back to the Pentagon. If successful, reporters can listen on Pentagon cable channel 13.

DEPUTY SECRETARY OF DEFENSE JOHN J. HAMRE

12:30 p.m. (EST) Deputy Secretary Hamre will address a conference on "Acquisition Reform: Accelerating the Journey" at the International Ballroom East, Washington Hilton and Towers. The Joint Senate Committee on Appropriations, Subcommittee on Defense and Subcommittee on Foreign Operations will conduct an OPEN hearing on efforts to cope with Hurricane Mitch, which hit Honduras and much of the Caribbean last Fall. Witnesses scheduled to testify include Gen. Charles Wilhelm, Commander in Chief, U.S. Southern Command; and Brian Atwood, Administrator, Agency for International Development.
