Today in the Department of Defense, Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000

Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen is in Washington today. He and Janet Langhart Cohen will host the first annual "Military Quality of Life Summit" today at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Secretary Cohen will speak twice: a keynote at 9:30 a.m. and a dinner speech at 8:50 p.m. See the advisory for details.

Deputy Secretary of Defense Rudy de Leon is in Southern California today, where he will speak to at a high school and at a business roundtable. See the advisory for details.

A Department of Defense news briefing will be conducted today at 1:30 p.m. in the Pentagon briefing studio, room 2E781. The briefer will be Kenneth H. Bacon, assistant secretary of Defense for public affairs.

Pacific Reach 2000, a cooperative regional submarine rescue exercise in the Pacific, continues through Oct. 14. For details see the Seventh Fleet news release.
