Today in the Department of Defense, Friday, Oct. 6, 2000

Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen departs today on visits to Tunisia, Greece and the United Kingdom. See the background briefing for details.

Deputy Secretary of Defense Rudy de Leon is continuing his visit to Southern California today. There are no scheduled public or media events on his schedule.

Many Department of Defense offices, including the press office, will be closed on Monday, Oct. 9, a federal holiday.

The next Department of Defense news briefing will be conducted on Tuesday, Oct. 10, at 1:30 p.m. in the Pentagon briefing studio, room 2E781. The briefer will be Rear Adm. Craig Quigley, deputy assistant secretary of Defense for public affairs.

Pacific Reach 2000, a cooperative regional submarine rescue exercise in the Pacific, continues through Oct. 14. For details see the Seventh Fleet news release.
