Today in the Department of Defense Oct. 7-10, 2000

Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen is traveling in Africa and Europe. See the background briefing for details.

Deputy Secretary of Defense Rudy de Leon is in Washington this weekend. There are no public or media events on his schedule.

Many Department of Defense offices, including the press office, will be closed on Monday, Oct. 9, a federal holiday.

A special news briefing to introduce the DoD common access card will be conducted on Tuesday, Oct. 10, at 1:30 p.m. in the DoD briefing room, Pentagon 2E781. See the advisory for details.

The next regular DoD news briefing will be conducted on Tuesday, Oct. 10, immediately following the special common access card briefing. The briefer will be Rear Adm. Craig Quigley, deputy assistant secretary of Defense for public affairs.

Pacific Reach 2000, a cooperative regional submarine rescue exercise in the Pacific, continues through Oct. 14. For details see the Seventh Fleet news release.
