Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates will deliver remarks at the 2009 National Guard Joint Senior Leadership Conference being held at The Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center, Potomac Ballroom, 201 Waterfront Street, National Harbor, Md., at 8:45 a.m. EST.  The secretary’s speech and question/answer session will be open to news media.  Questions will be taken from conference attendees only.  Press wishing to cover the event will need to arrive NLT 8 a.m. and check-in at Potomac Ballroom A.  Contact LTC Robert L. Gates hosts an honor cordon to welcome German Minister of Defense Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg to the Pentagon at 11 a.m. EST.  The cordon will be held on the steps of the Pentagon River Entrance.  Secretary Gates and Minister Guttenberg will give brief statements to the press at the River Entrance at the conclusion of their meeting.  Journalists without a Pentagon building pass will be picked up at the Pentagon River Parking Entrance only.  Plan to arrive no later than 30 minutes prior to the event; have proof of affiliation and two forms of photo identification.  Please call (703) 697-5131 for escort to the cordon.

Deputy Secretary of Defense William J. Lynn has no public or media events on his schedule.

 

The Senate Armed Services Committee considers the nominations of Clifford L. Stanley to be under secretary of defense for personnel and readiness, and Erin C. Conaton to be under secretary of the Air Force at 9:30 a.m. EST in Room 216 of the Hart Senate Office Building.
