Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Peter Pace will participate in a ground-breaking ceremony to mark the beginning of work on the Pentagon Memorial at 1:30 p.m.  The Pentagon Memorial will commemorate the 184 innocent lives lost in the Pentagon and on American Airlines Flight 77 on Sept. 11, 2001.  Media interested in covering the event should contact DoD Press Office at 703-697-5131.  For camera and technical information call 703-695-0169. Set up can occur as early as 5 a.m., but all must be in place no later than 1 p.m.

Deputy Secretary of Defense Gordon England has no public or media events on his schedule.

Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics Kenneth Krieg will present the annual Department of Defense Value Engineering Achievement Awards at 2:30 p.m. EDT. The awards ceremony will be held in the Pentagon Auditorium, Room BH650, and is open for media coverage.  Journalists without a Pentagon building pass will be picked up at the North Parking Entrance only. Plan to arrive no later than 45 minutes prior to the event; have proof of affiliation and two forms of photo identification. Please call (703) 697-5131 for escort into the building.
