Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates will be a keynote speaker at U.S. Central Command's second annual Gulf States Chiefs of Defense Conference at 12:15 p.m. EDT at the Fairfax Hotel, Washington, D.C. Attending journalists should be prepared to provide valid media credentials issued by their media organizations, as well as government issued identification.

 

Deputy Secretary of Defense William J. Lynn has no public or media events on his schedule.

 

Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Counternarcotics and Global Threats William Wechsler testifies at a hearing of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on confronting drug trafficking in West Africa at 10 a.m. EDT in room 419 Dirksen Senate Building.

 

Deputy Commandant for Aviation Lt. Gen. George Trautman testifies at a hearing of the House Government Reform Committee at 2 p.m. EDT on The Future of the V-22 Osprey: Costs, Capabilities, and Challenges at 2 p.m. EDT in room 2154 Rayburn House Building.

 

Col. John M. Spiszer, commander of 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, will brief live from Afghanistan at 10:30 a.m. EDT, June 23, in the DoD Briefing Room, Pentagon 2E973, to provide an operational update. Journalists without a Pentagon building pass will be picked up at River Entrance only. Plan to arrive no later than 45 minutes prior to the event; have proof of affiliation and two forms of photo identification. Please call (703) 697-5131 for escort into the building.
