Today in the Department of Defense, Tuesday, August 1, 2000

Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen and Deputy Secretary of Defense Rudy de Leon are in Washington. There are no public or media events on their schedules.

Today's regular Department of Defense news briefing will be conducted at 2:30 p.m., one hour later than usual, in the Pentagon briefing studio, room 2E781. The briefer will be Kenneth H. Bacon, assistant secretary of Defense for public affairs.

More than 1,000 soldiers and Marines are en route or already helping to fight wildfires in the West. See the news release for details.

The Navy guided-missile cruiser USS Chancellorsville (CG 62) will visit Qingdao, People's Republic of China, from Aug. 2 to Aug. 5. See the news release for details.

Cornerstone 00-1, a combined engineering exercise with Moldova, continues through late August. See the news release for details.

General Shelton visits California and St. Louis, Missouri Army Gen. Henry H. Shelton, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will depart Andrews Air Force Base, Md., on Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, for a visit to California.
