Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen is on leave.

Deputy Secretary of Defense Rudy de Leon is traveling in Alaska today through Aug. 18. There are no public or media events on his schedule.

Army Gen. Henry H. Shelton, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will participate in the dedication ceremony of the Airborne and Special Operations Museum today at Fort Bragg, N.C. See the press advisory for details.

Nearly 2,900 servicemen and women are now helping to fight wildfires in the West. See the DoD news briefing transcript for a summary.

Arctic SAREX 00, a combined arctic search and rescue exercise in Russia, begins today and continues through Aug. 19. The DoD Family Readiness Conference will take place in Phoenix, Ariz., Aug. 22-24. For details see the news release and the conference web page.

Cornerstone 00-1, a combined engineering exercise with Moldova, continues through late August. See the news release for details.

Millennium Challenge 2000, the armed forces' first joint field experiment, continues through Sept. 13 at various locations in the U.S. See the news release for details.
