Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen is on leave.

Deputy Secretary of Defense Rudy de Leon is traveling in Alaska through Aug. 18. There are no public or media events on his schedule.

The regular Department of Defense news briefing will be conducted today at 1:30 p.m. in the Pentagon briefing studio, room 2E781. The briefer will be Rear Adm. Craig R. Quigley, deputy assistant secretary of Defense for public affairs.

Nearly 2,900 servicemen and women are now helping to fight wildfires in the West. See the DoD news briefing transcript for a summary.

Arctic SAREX 00, a combined arctic search and rescue exercise in Russia, begins continues through Aug. 19. Members of the U.S. Alaskan Command, Alaska Air National Guard, Alaska Army National Guard, Canadian air forces and Russian air forces are participating. See the news release for details.

The DoD Family Readiness Conference will take place in Phoenix, Ariz., Aug. 22-24. For details see the news release and the conference web page.

Cornerstone 00-1, a combined engineering exercise with Moldova, continues through late August. See the news release for details.

REMAINS OF U.S. SERVICEMEN RECOVERED IN NORTH KOREA Remains believed to be those of 14 American servicemen, missing in action from the Korean War, will be repatriated Saturday, Aug. 19, Korea time.
