Today in the Department of Defense, September 2-5, 2000

Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen is on leave through the weekend. At 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5, Secretary Cohen will speak at the U.S. Joint Forces Command change of command ceremony in Norfolk, Va. See the advisory for details.

Deputy Secretary of Defense Rudy de Leon is on leave through the weekend. There are no public or media events on his schedule.

Because of Secretary Cohen's visit to Norfolk, there will be no regular DoD news briefing on Tuesday, Sept. 5.

Nearly 4,600 servicemembers are now helping to fight wildfires in the West. See news release for details.

Millennium Challenge 2000, the armed forces' first joint field experiment, continues through Sept. 13 at various locations in the U.S. See the news release for details.

Cornerstone 00-2, a combined engineering exercise with Moldova, continues through Sept. 16. See the news release for details.

The department's Legislative Affairs Office maintains a separate Congressional Schedule of Events.
