W. Alan Matney is the U.S. Defense Coordinator for the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, responsible for coordinating defense efforts of the 87-member Coalition with leaders from the Defense Ministries of Coalition partners. He works closely with counterparts from the State Department to provide U.S. leadership in the Coalition’s mission to ensure the enduring defeat of ISIS.

Mr. Matney has over three decades of experience serving in national security roles, with nearly 20 years of experience working on the counterterrorism mission in different parts of the U.S. Government. He returned to government service in 2023 after working as a strategy consultant for Deloitte.

He is a Distinguished Graduate of the U.S. Air Academy and has graduate degrees from Georgetown and Harvard universities, where his academic work focused on the intersection of religion and foreign policy. Mr. Matney served as a Senior Advisor in the State Department’s Office of Religion and Global Affairs from 2015 to 2016.

He is a brigadier general in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, assigned to the headquarters of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command in Camp Smith, Hawaii.
