Army Women Col. Oveta Culp Hobby was the first woman sworn into the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps, or WAAC, in 1942 and she appointed as its director. When the WAAC was converted to the Women's Army Corps in July 1943, Hobby was appointed to the rank of colonel in the U.S. Army and she continued to serve as director of the WAC.
