Army Capt. James E. Miller Army Capt. James E. Miller served as a pilot during World War I, and was the first U.S.-trained pilot to be a combat aviation casualty of the war. The Army awarded him the Distinguished Flying Cross, and presented the posthumous award to his great-grandson during a twilight tattoo event, June 14, 2017, at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, Va.
