Kurdish evacuees begin filling out paperwork for asylum in the United States. Kurdish evacuees begin filling out paperwork for asylum in the United States after they arrived at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, on Sept. 17, 1996, on a civilian charter flight from Turkey as part of Operation Pacific Haven. These Kurdish evacuees are the first of approximately 2,000 foreign service nationals and their families who were associated with the United States government's humanitarian efforts in Northern Iraq. They will be sheltered and fed at Andersen Air Force Base and processed on a case-by-case basis for entry into the continental United States as quickly as possible.
