26th Marine Expeditionary Unit arrives in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo. U.S. Marines of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) prepare to move out after arriving in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo, on April 3, 1997. Command and support elements for a forward joint task force and other enabling elements are deploying to locations in several West African countries as part of contingency planning for a possible future evacuation from Zaire. The deployment is an enhancement to planning for contingency measures to ensure the security of U.S. citizens in Zaire if an evacuation should become necessary.
