Joseph Calebro, U.S. Marine Corps, uses an AN/PSC-3 Satellite Communications Radio to establish communications from the tarmac at Pointe Noire, Republic of Congo, on April 9, 1997. Command and support elements for a forward joint task force and other enabling elements are deploying to locations in several West African countries as part of contingency planning for a possible future evacuation from Zaire. The deployment is an enhancement to planning for contingency measures to ensure the security of U.S. citizens in Zaire if an evacuation should become necessary. Calebro is attached to Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252 to provide KC-130 Hercules aircraft with secure communications.
