The MFO was established by a protocol to the March 26, 1979 Treaty of Peace between Egypt and Israel. The force assumed its duties in April 1982, following Israel's withdrawal from the region. The peacekeepers monitor compliance with the provisions of the treaty and ensure freedom of navigation through the Strait of Tiran. Cohen is in the region to meet with his counterparts in a number of Middle Eastern nations.
