The hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) gets underway from San Diego, Calif., for a one-day shakedown cruise prior to deployment to Southeast Asia on Jan. 3, 2005. Operated by the Military Sealift Command, the Mercy contains 12 fully equipped operating rooms, a 1,000-bed hospital facility, digital radiological services, a diagnostic and clinical laboratory, a pharmacy, an optometry lab, a cat scan and two oxygen-producing plants. U.S. service men and women are working to deliver humanitarian relief supplies and provide medical assistance to the tsunami-stricken countries as part of Operation Unified Assistance.
