Deputy Secretary of Defense Gordon England (right) looks on as Italian Under Secretary of State for Defense Giovanni Lorenzo Foreieri signs a memorandum of understanding concerning the Joint Strike Fighter Program in the Pentagon on Feb. 7, 2007. The document establishes a framework for cooperation in the production, sustainment and follow-on development of the F-35 aircraft. The Joint Strike Fighter is planned to have variants of the basic design that are scheduled to equip squadrons in the Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps. The program involves nine allied nations sharing technology advances and development costs. In addition to the U.S. and Italy, these nations include: the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Canada, Australia, Turkey, Denmark and Norway.
