Frank Woodruff Buckles, age 107, was the guest of honor at a Pentagon ceremony to unveil portraits of the last nine World War I veterans on March 6, 2008. Buckles enlisted in the U.S. Army at age 15 and drove an ambulance during the war. He is one of two surviving vets of that era. The other, John Babcock, who served with the Canadian forces, was unable to attend the ceremony. The portrait photographer David DeJonge commented that the saddest aspect of his project was receiving notice that seven of his subjects had passed away before the unveiling.
