Gates (left) listens as 107 year-old WWI veteran Frank Buckles addresses the audience in the Pentagon auditorium on March 6, 2008. Buckles spoke during the unveiling ceremony for his, and eight other portraits of the last veterans of The Great War. Photographer David DeJonge commented that one of the saddest aspects of his project was receiving notifications of the passing of seven of his subjects. The other surviving vet, John Babcock, who served with the Canadian armed forces in WWI, was unable to attend the ceremony. The portraits will be placed on display in the Pentagon.
