Battle Survivors

Survivors of the Battle of Leyte Gulf are rescued by a U.S. Navy ship, Oct. 26, 1944. About 1,200 survivors of USS Gambier Bay, USS Hoel, USS Johnston and USS Samuel B. Roberts were rescued during the days following the battle that eventually helped return the Philippines to U.S. control.
