Army Astronaut Dr. Frank Rubio waves as he is introduced as one of 12 new NASA astronaut candidates during an event at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, June 7, 2017. Three years later, NASA selected him as one of the 18 astronauts to train for the Artemis moon-landing program. Raised by his immigrant mother from El Salvador, Rubio graduated from the U.S. Military Academy and became an Army UH-60 Black Hawk pilot, and then served as an Army surgeon and physician after graduating from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.
