Battle of Bunker Hill The Battle of Bunker Hill is depicted in "The Whites of Their Eyes," a painting by Kenneth Riley. The battle was fought near Boston on June 17, 1775, during the Revolutionary War. Fighting against the British were militia from Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Hampshire. Riley, an illustrator, enlisted in the Coast Guard as a combat artist in World War II. During the war, he was on-site at the invasions of the Gilbert, Marshall and Mariana islands in the South Pacific. Following the War, Riley returned to illustration and contributed to magazines, including the Saturday Evening Post and National Geographic. President John F. Kennedy chose this painting, "The Whites of Their Eyes," for the White House Collection in 1962.
